Empower DC: The District of Columbia Grassroots Empowerment Project’s mission is to enhance and improve the self-advocacy of low income and working people in the District of Columbia in order to bring about sustained self-improvement in their quality of life. Take action for affordable housing, child care and government accountability with Empower DC.
1417 Coop (Formerly Norwood Coop): The 1417 N Street NW Apartment building is one of a few affordable buildings in the Logan Circle neighborhood. A former rent-controlled building, the seven story 84 unit cooperative is made up of diverse residents of moderate income families and individuals who work in the city in various service industry and professional occupations. Since the purchase of their building in 2011, the Norwood Coop has been creating new models to build power and create alternative, tenant-owned economic opportunity in the District. Many Languages One Voice (MLOV): MLOV is a grassroots, community-based, movement-focused organization that advocates alongside low-income, immigrant communities to ensure their own liberation. MLOV believes in working with, rather than for low-income immigrant communities; that low-income immigrant communities have a rightful place in the District; and that the passage of any progressive legislation must be coupled by mindful monitoring and enforcement led by impacted communities. |
